A mandatory regulatory environmental audit is required to be undertaken every 3years in accordance with condition as provided in sections 21 of the S.I.9 regulations of 1991 on National environmental protection (Pollution abatement in Industries and facilities Generating Wastes), EIA Act No 86 of 1992 and 7(a) and 7(k) of the NESREA Act No 25 of 2007 by facilities to ensure that environmental auditing complements regulatory requirements and the use of any equipment or activity that undermines environmental integrity therefore maintaining environmental governance.
Ashawa Consults Limited was commissioned by IHS Nigeria to handle the compliance and certification for 12,180 Base Transceiver Station(BTS) sites across all 36 states of Nigeria and the FCT.
The objectives of the audit were:
- Assessing the performance against a set of requirement or targets, related to specific issues;
- Evaluating compliance with environmental legislation and corporate policies;
- Measuring performance against the requirements of an environmental management system standard; and
- Exploring the potential economic, social and environmental benefits that an improved performance can achieve
The overall outcome of the audit was positive with a high level of compliance to requirements set out in the scope of the audit.
