10 EASY AND SIMPLE WAYS YOU CAN CONSERVE WATER

Water covers 71 percent of the Earth’s surface, yet less than 2.5 percent of that water is drinkable. Approximately one billion people still lack access to safe water and over 2.5 billion lack access to adequate sanitation. That it is important to conserve water and be less wasteful in how we use them. We have compiled 10 ways in which you can cut your water usage reasonably while still able to achieve your goals.

 

  1. Don’t leave your tap running: When brushing your teeth, washing your hand or face or even dishes, don’t leave the tap running. Turn it on when you need it and turn it off during those short periods you don’t need it as well. This ensures less water disappears down the drain.
  2. Use a dual flush on your toilet: As against old toilets, new features for water closets include the dual flush system. This helps you use less water when you only need less water. The dual flush is a simple device to use and can reduce your water usage by more than half.
  3. Set up a rain barrel: A lot of water is runs off into the soil when it rains. You can save some of these for usage and put less pressure on the water agency. Set up a rain barrel to collect rainwater.  You may even purify the water.
  4. Repair dripping faucets.Ensure you check your faucets to ensure they are not dripping. According to American Water & Energy Savers, a faucet that drips at the rate of one drop per second will waste 2,700 gallons per year.
  5. Reduce food waste- A lot of water is used to produce and prepare food, therefore the more food you waste; the more water you waste. So plan your food intake, buy only what you need when you need it.

 

  1. Teach your kids how to conserve water– Kids are mostly carefree in the use of water. Therefore, it is important you teach them early the importance of conserving water and ways they can conserve water.

 

  1. Clean gutters with brooms – Instead of running water into gutters to clear sewage or other dirt in the gutter, you can use a broom or other tools such as rakes. Keep your water hose for more important usage.
  2. Recycle Water Use at Home – Several times when we use water, the leftover water is good enough for other uses. E.g. water used in cooking pasta can later be used to water the garden. Water used in rinsing plates can be used to wash tyres etc.
  3. Cover your swimming pool – If you have a swimming pool, it is a good idea to cover it when not in use. This is to prevent evaporation and undue loss of water. It would also reduce your need to refill it frequently.
  4. Choose efficient fixtures.When you buy fixtures for your house, get the efficient ones. They would save you litres of water. Aerate your faucets, use low flow toilets and efficient showerheads. You can also get a water metre to measure your usage.
